Sex!

The next installment of this innovative reading series is so close to Valentine’s Day that we couldn’t avoid exploring some aspects of sex and lust and love, from a boy’s first education, to a call girl’s social skills, to tips on improving hetero sex, to the story of Nabokov’s gay brother.

Clay McLeod Chapman (“Rest Area”), Rachel Rabbit White, Tracy Quan (“Diary of a Jetsetting Call Girl”), and Paul Russell (“The Unreal Life of Sergey Nabokov”) read from fiction and nonfiction.

A panel discussion on sex—what is it doing to us and who’s in control, us or it?—will follow.

Come join the author for a reading, a signing, a reception with fortune tellers and (who knows) maybe some gender-bending? In Karen Heuler’s “The Made-Up Man,” Alyson Salky gets fed up by her boyfriend, her boss, even her dog—all of it! She meets a fortune teller who claims to give her anything she wants, and Alyson decides she wants to be a man.

And soon enough Al becomes Bob, intent on getting ahead in life—and getting even. But how do reversals work out? And can you really expect to get what you want when you’re dealing with a rather bored devil with a sense of irony? Who gets the last, best trick before the deal runs out?

The next installment of this innovative reading series, where the admission fee is $5 or a story, will be Sunday, November 13, 2011. Evan Mandery, Sean Ferrell, and Jeff Somers will read about going somewhere else in time or changing the present to please the future. They dine with (or conspire against) their future selves, revisit past moments in the hopes of improving them, and generally try not to tear the delicate fabric of the space-time continuum.

A panel discussion on time travel, paradox, and the importance of pants will follow, which in turn will be followed by a reception.

In this innovative reading series, where the admission fee is $5 or a story, Coryn Brown reads from a story about earrings that two sisters both want; Brooks Sherman reads about the delicate etiquette a stranger needs to observe during a famine; and Helen Phillips reads from her acclaimed debut novel, AND YET THEY WERE HAPPY, a collection of fables about a couple living in a surreal world.

After the reading, the writers will also discuss what first brought them to write their stories, what’s appealing about the genre they chose to write in, and whether it’s easier or harder to write from the imagination rather than from life experience—and whether there’s any difference between them.

Vampires aren’t the only things kids have to put up with these days! There are zombies, and elves and life’s unexpected knocks.
