In the ancient village of Mertola, Portugal (pop.1500) There is an old monastery that was home to an abbott and Twelve Monks. Today it has been restored by the Zwanikkens, a Dutch family who, over the past 25 years have transformed the rotting landscape and crumbling chapel into a home, nature preserve & artist retreat. At The Convento Sao Francisco de Mertola, a new breed of artists, musicians, dancers, and the weirdest people on planet Earth come to gather— off the grid, gliding along the river Guadiana.
