Unfinished Business

"Two" - Barbara Weiss

Barbara’s recent work is the result of a confluence of influences; most notably her work as an acupuncturist and the Taoist philosophy and Five Element theory that serve as the foundation of Oriental Medicine. The work has also been informed by her career as a theatre and film designer and its engagement with the figure in relationship to its environment.

Her process involved delving into the realm of ghosts and demons – the keepers of unfinished business; what the Chinese refer to as The Gui. She explored the tension between opposing concepts: emerging and submerging, revealing and obfuscating, taking in and letting go.

The figures in the work, at times frenetic, mischievous, and playful, are also in the process of breaking out.

A series of haunting self-portraits by Miru Kim exploring various urban ruins. A companion short film projection, BLIND DOOR (10 mins 33 secs, 16 mm, B/W), by Miru Kim and Isidore Roussel, was also shown. The exhibit features intimate depictions of the artist’s child/animal-like movements as she interacts with desolate spaces. For Kim and Roussel, these spaces – abandoned subway stations, tunnels, sewers, factories, hospitals, and shipyards – form the internal organs and unconscious of the city. As our gallery hours are flexible, we invite you to contact us for access between events! Closing party at 6pm on Saturday, March 21st.
