Though it sounds grim, Fool’s Mass is full of buffoonery and comic audience participation. This, along with choral singing of sacred hymns and chants from the 8th through the 17th centuries, combines to create a work which travels from the ridiculous to the sublime.

It is also the tenth anniversary of the death of Jerzy Grotowski , the father of Dzieci’s theatrical lineage, The Poor Theatre. It is no accident that the mythic priest of Fools Mass is named Father Jerzy. The piece has always been a tribute to Grotowski and a memorial. Though company director, Matt Mitler, studied primarily with Ryszard Cieslak, Grotowski’s lead actor, and had intense contact with the rest of the members of the Polish Theatre Laboratory, his interactions with Grotowski himself were brief. But not so brief as to leave him unaffected.
