by Daniel Asia, Libretto by Paul Pines

Daniel Asia and Paul Pines have been working collaboratively since they met thirty years ago at the MacDowell Colony, in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Asia has set numerous Pines’ poems in works that range from pieces for piano, chamber ensembles and orchestra, to his 5th Symphony that was premiered in November 2008 by the Tucson Symphony Orchestra.

Over the years they discussed collaborating on an opera, and decided on this project based on Pines’ novel, The Tin Angel (Wm. Morrow, 1983). The novel received rave notices: “The drug/jazz world of New York’s East Village has seldom been rendered more honestly or graphically…” said Publishers Weekly; The New York Times Sunday Book Review stated, “…this swift tale of murder and
revenge rattles along stylishly and fulfills all our expectations for high-grade suspense.”

Set in New York City in 1949, the opera follows Holocaust survivor Herman Broder. Throughout the war he survived in a hayloft, taken care of by his non-Jewish, Polish servant, Yadwiga, whom he later takes as his wife in America. Meanwhile, he has an affair with another Holocaust survivor, Masha. To Yadwiga, he poses as a traveling book-salesman despite the fact he is simply a ghost writer for a corrupt rabbi. He wanders about New York with a constant paranoia and perpetual desperation, made more complicated when his first wife from Poland, Tamara, who was thought to be killed in the Holocaust, comes to New York.
Inspired by the life and writings of the noted diarist Anaïs Nin, this opera is a psychological drama of obsessive love during the last minutes of life. Anaïs attempts to come to terms with her impending death in the presence of her lover and long-time companion, Rupert Pole. In what amounts to a test of his devotion, she seeks his understanding but also clearly enjoys shocking him as she revisits and reveals some of the strongest memories of her life, her innumerable infidelities, incestuous relations and her violent rejection of motherhood. Rupert is unable to forgive Anaïs for these dark secrets before she struggles out of bed and then collapses, alone, to the floor.

Music by Randall Eng
Libretto by Alexis Bernier

On his arrival at Henry’s estate, Daniel realizes that there is a much more personal rather than professional reason for his being there. He experiences “love at first sight” with Pascal and unprovoked antagonism from Marisa. And it seems that he is being interviewed by Henry rather than the other way around. Finally, Henry reveals that for a long time, he has been dreaming about his dead first wife and the dream life he shares with her has become more important, more satisfying, more real to him than his waking life. The dreamed directives of Henry’s late wife have been given voice through Henry and all four characters must find ways to now accept and follow.
