From the Director, Elinor Renfield:

This play written in 1886 precedes Hedda Gabler by four years.  There are many who believe this play to be Ibsen’s masterpiece.  It presents a portrait of idealism and democracy floundering in a society of conservatism and opportunism.  At its center is a character so controversial that many essays, including one by Freud,  have been written attempting to analyze her behavior.
