Artist Justin Waldstein’s collection draws directly from life and found photos, capturing resonant moments of exhilaration and futility, as well as the beauty and fragility of the human form. His work utilizes explosive color and line to illuminate triumph, glory, energy, mortality and tragedy. The paintings on unstretched canvas are theatrical, reminiscent of discarded posters or torn shreds of sideshow banners. Throughout the collection, there is a hint of the renaissance tapestries of lost empires, and with a sculptural, organic surface, they hang as butchers’ hides displaying wrinkled images on tattooed flesh.

________

ABOUT JUSTIN WALDSTEIN:

Justin Waldstein is a Brooklyn-based artist with a background in both fine and commercial art. A New York City native, he has exhibited his paintings, drawings and projections in galleries, performance spaces and theaters in New York and internationally. He has also worked as a designer, photographer and illustrator. As a student, Justin maintained a multi-disciplinary study of art, combining film, history, anthropology, religion, and Russian literature at Parsons School of Design, The New School for Social Research and Hunter College. He continues this varied approach to art in his current practice, which has recently expanded to include projections using drawings and photos in live performance. In 2008 he developed a projection piece, “Bazm-o-Razm,” in collaboration with singer-composer Susan Oetgen which premiered at the Brooklyn Museum. Justin has continued exploring this medium during a residency and performance at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in 2010. At the end of that year he created visuals composed of drawings and animation for artist Shaun Leonardo’s “Self Portrait,” which was performed at HERE Art Center in New York City.

________

About JILL KNOX

Jill Knox loves claiming that she was born in New York City because growing up in the suburbs of Connecticut wasn’t very exciting. Luckily for her, being exposed to the arts was not a choice but a requirement in the house she grew up in. Having mother who sits on the board of the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and a father who sat on the board of American Ballet Theater at Lincoln Center and later chairing the Studio Museum in Harlem, its no wonder that she has embraced the arts in the way that she has.

Jill received her BA magna cum laude from NYU’s Gallatin School of individualize Study, focusing on Theater History and Sociology. After completing a thesis entitled “Theater that Challenges Social Structures from Ancient Greece to the Present” she went on to receive her MFA in Acting from the Brown University/Trinity Rep Consortium. There, she performed in a variety of roles, such as Bianca in both The Taming of the Shrew and Desdemona a Play about a Handkerchief and Doña Estrelita in Tony Kushner’s Hydriotaphia , which led to her being cast in Trinity Rep’s main stage production, “All the Kings Men”. Since graduation in 2008, Jill has performed in HAIR at the Hangar Theater and JUMP JIM CROW: How to Produce Your Own Minstrel Show for the Subjective Theater Company.

Jill filled her insomnia-ridden graduate school nights with paint-brushes and ladders, creating large murals on the walls of her loft in RI. This has led to developing a unique style that has been commissioned for weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries.

A series of haunting self-portraits by Miru Kim exploring various urban ruins. A companion short film projection, BLIND DOOR (10 mins 33 secs, 16 mm, B/W), by Miru Kim and Isidore Roussel, was also shown. The exhibit features intimate depictions of the artist’s child/animal-like movements as she interacts with desolate spaces. For Kim and Roussel, these spaces – abandoned subway stations, tunnels, sewers, factories, hospitals, and shipyards – form the internal organs and unconscious of the city. As our gallery hours are flexible, we invite you to contact us for access between events! Closing party at 6pm on Saturday, March 21st.
